Start classes at 8am, govt urged

A university lecturer said classes should start later to ensure the health, safety and well-being of students, teachers and parents.

PETALING JAYA: A senior lecturer has urged the government to start classes in Peninsular Malaysia at 8am to ease the burden on teachers, parents and students.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) senior lecturer Anuar Ahmad said the government should be compassionate to teachers, parents and students who have to wake up as early as 4.30am.

“For those who go to school in the city, they would have to face traffic jams that start at 6am.

“Meanwhile, some children in rural areas have to travel on a rickshaw, on muddy roads or by boat while it is still dark,” he said in a Facebook post.

At present, most schools start at 7.30am.

Anuar said some students and teachers could not have breakfast with their families because of how early they had to leave home.

“If the government is concerned about the safety, well-being and health of its people, why not do the right thing and start the school session at 8am?”

Anuar said the proposal was in line with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Malaysia Madani concept. - FMT
