KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Mohamad Akmal Saleh is not resigning from his post and will continue his duties as usual.
Umno Youth exco member Aizat Azam said the wing remains steadfast in its support for Akmal's leadership.
"Dr Akmal Saleh will continue his duties as Umno Youth chief. The Umno Youth exco supports Dr Akmal to continue leading the wing," he said here today.
He added that the Merlimau assemblyman arrived back in the country from Shanghai, China, at noon today.
This comes amid media reports that Akmal had expressed his intention to resign not only as Umno Youth chief but also as Merlimau assemblyman, according to sources close to the party.
The sources claimed that Akmal had informed a group of Umno Youth leaders of his intention via a WhatsApp message yesterday while he was in Shanghai, China.
However, the reports were denied by several Umno Youth leaders, including his close associate and Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem.
Previously, Akmal had hinted at the possibility of stepping down from his position, saying he may have reached a point where he should make way.
His comments come amid a series of high-profile interventions in party and national politics.
In recent months, the Umno Youth chief has been vocal about reassessing Umno's role in the unity government, urging party leaders to consider moving into opposition if core "red lines" on race, religion and royalty are breached. - NST
