MACC seizes cash, gold worth RM6.9mil in army procurement probe

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized cash in multiple foreign currencies, gold bars, and a high-performance SUV worth an estimated RM6.9 million as part of its investigation into alleged corruption involving army procurement projects.

Sources said the cash seized included holdings in US dollars, euros, British pounds, Japanese yen and Saudi riyals.

The seizures were made following an inspection of the SUV at a workshop in the Klang Valley, where the vehicle was believed to have been left for repairs.

"Among the items seized were three 999 gold bars, each weighing one kilogramme, with a current estimated value of about RM1.8 million.

"Also seized were nine gold bars weighing 100 grammes each, valued at more than RM500,000, as well as the high-performance SUV estimated to be worth around RM360,000, which is believed to have been purchased in cash," the source said.

Meanwhile, MACC senior director of investigations Datuk Zainul Darus, when contacted, confirmed the seizure.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 16(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which relates to the offence of soliciting or receiving gratification.

On Jan 6, it was reported that a total of 17 company directors were remanded by the MACC on suspicion of being part of a procurement cartel involving the army.

The suspects were remanded for five days until Jan 10 to assist in investigations following an application by the MACC at the magistrate's court in Putrajaya.

Preliminary investigations showed that the suspects are believed to have paid bribes to a senior army officer in exchange for securing supply and maintenance projects.

It was reported that the MACC launched an investigation into 26 companies linked to army procurement contracts over allegations of corruption.

Sources had said the owners of all the companies are also under investigation, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of remanding them to assist with inquiries.

MACC began investigating all 26 companies in the Klang Valley, Perak and Penang on Jan 5. - NST
