KOTA BARU: Far from his war-ravaged homeland, a Gaza-born businessman who has lived in Kelantan for 15 years has taken it upon himself to help Palestinians in need.
Abdllah Ismail, 40, a father of two living in Pantai Cahaya Bulan, appealed to Malaysians on social media and collected more than 20,000 items, including clothes, blankets, headscarves, and toys, within a month.
Contributions came from across the country, including Johor and other states, with some donors even posting the items at their own expense.
Abdllah, who arrived in Malaysia in 2012 and later married a Kelantanese woman, said the response showed the generosity and compassion of Malaysians towards the Palestinian cause.
"The donations reflect how generous Malaysians are. Many of them are willing to help in whatever way they can," he said at his home, which also serves as temporary storage for the items.
"These clothes and items are very useful for the people there, especially during the winter season, when warm clothing and blankets are badly needed," he added.
Abdllah said the next challenge is arranging for the donations to reach Gaza.
"I hope there are NGOs or organisations willing to sponsor or assist in sending these items to Gaza so they can reach those who need them most," he said, urging anyone able to contribute, in whatever way possible, to support the Palestinian people.
Malaysia has long expressed strong support for the Palestinian cause, with the government and civil society calling for international assistance and solidarity amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. - NST
