Anwar as PM proves Umno Youth produces 'great' leaders - Akmal

UMNO AGM | Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh today reminded delegates that one of his predecessors is now at the height of federal power, while one is behind bars.

In his winding-up speech at the Umno Youth assembly, Akmal noted that various delegates during their debates of his policy speech had touched on the issue of one former youth chief, Khairy Jamaluddin, who made his maiden return this morning after being sacked from the party.

“Today, many spoke about a former Umno Youth chief (Khairy). (And) Today, there is a former Umno Youth chief who holds the number one position - Anwar Ibrahim.

“I congratulate him (Anwar). Because it proves that the Umno Youth ‘factory’ is a place that produces great leaders, even though he is in another party,” he said.

Akmal quipped that earlier, an Umno Youth delegate from among its younger members, dubbed “Putra”, had even started his speech with “Salam Reformasi”, a slogan synonymous with Anwar’s PKR.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak

“It’s okay. He’s our younger brother, we’ll teach him,” he added.

Akmal went on to remind delegates that former premier Najib Abdul Razak, who was also former Umno president and Umno Youth chief, is behind bars.

“(He is) someone who has contributed greatly to all of us, and to this country.

“So, I need to remind you: that’s why I said, our struggle in Umno Youth has never been easy.

“We pray that Bossku is granted good health, that his affairs are made easier, and we pray, insyaAllah, there will be good news for Bossku in the near future,” he said, using Najib’s moniker among his supporters.

He also stressed that Umno Youth under his leadership will not forget the contributions of the party leaders - those who remain, and others who have left.

Resignation sparking panic

Meanwhile, Akmal, who during his policy speech this afternoon also announced his resignation as a Malacca state executive councillor, claimed that the move had sparked “panic” from among those who are “afraid”.

“A lot of people panicked. Because they were afraid I’d go full-time attacking them after this.

“But I want to say this: when Akmal Saleh resigns as an exco member, InsyaAllah, Akmal Saleh will produce another 300,000 Akmal Salehs to ‘whack’ these people later,” he said.

In announcing his resignation, Akmal had said, “I am brave enough to state that I am resigning to ‘lawan DAP habis-habisan’ (fight DAP till the end),” he said to applause and cheers from the delegates.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, also a former Umno Youth chief, later told reporters he would be meeting Akmal to ask who he wanted to attack. - Mkini
