PEKAN: A large piece of suspected rocket fairing that was found washed ashore in Kampung Tanjung, Nenasi, near here on Dec 30 last year has caught the attention of the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.
The ruler visited the Nenasi police station today to take a closer look at the barnacle-encrusted space debris, which has been kept at the premises for monitoring and examination by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.
According to a post on the Kesultanan Pahang Facebook page, Al-Sultan Abdullah spent about 20 minutes at the police station, where he was briefed by the ministry's Space Authority Division space regulator, Dr Mhd Fairos Asillam.
"The Sultan was briefed on the ongoing research being conducted by the ministry on the object, including its shape, current condition, and the original location of the fragments," the post said.

The huge debris, weighing about 200kg, was discovered by a member of the public about 5pm on Dec 30.
The following day, the debris, measuring some 4m by 3m, was transported to the Nenasi police station in a three-tonne lorry.
A rocket fairing is a nose cone designed to shield a satellite from aerodynamic forces, heat, and debris during atmospheric ascent, usually made from lightweight composite materials. - NST
