KULIM: The Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) acted within the law in deciding there would be no further action (NFA) on the 47 charges linked to Yayasan Akalbudi funds involving Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Article 145 of the Federal Constitution empowers the Attorney-General to decide whether a case should be prosecuted.
"Any decision made, I believe is made within the legal framework and based on the powers conferred by the Constitution," he said after a "back to school" aid programme in Serdang here today.
He added that he would refrain from commenting further until he receives more detailed information.
Zahid, who is also Umno president, was previously granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in the Yayasan Akalbudi case, which involved 47 charges of corruption, money laundering, and criminal breach of trust.
The DNAA was previously granted to allow the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to conduct further investigations into the case.
In a statement today, the A-GC said it found insufficient evidence to proceed with the charges following the completion of the MACC probe.
Earlier, Saifuddin also conducted a work visit at the new Kulim Immigration Office, which will soon operate from a larger and more comfortable premise, addressing long-standing public complaints over congestion, limited parking, and poor comfort at its former shoplot location.
He said the relocation was aimed at improving service delivery in line with current demands, particularly the rising volume of transactions involving passports, border passes, and foreign worker management.
"The new premises offer a much larger floor area and can accommodate more than 38 personnel at any one time, in addition to providing a more conducive waiting area for customers.
"Service efficiency is also a key focus, with passport applications reportedly processed, approved, and issued within about an hour, a performance benchmark that can be considered very good for the department," he said.
Saifuddin added that public comfort and smooth service delivery must always remain a priority, as immigration services are among the frontline agencies that deal directly with the public.
He also said the strategic location of the new office is expected to benefit not only residents of southern Kedah, but also those from Penang, who can access the office via nearby highways, particularly on weekends, thereby helping to ease congestion at other immigration offices. - NST
