Anwar arrives in Istanbul for final leg of Turkiye visit

ISTANBUL: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Istanbul today to attend several programmes before concluding his three-day official visit to Turkiye.

A special aircraft carrying the Prime Minister and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail touched down at Istanbul International Airport at 2.19pm local time (7.19pm Malaysian time).

He was accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.

Upon arrival, Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, attended a roundtable session with over 40 companies from various sectors in Turkiye and Malaysia at a hotel here, today.

He is expected to receive a courtesy visit from former international footballer Mesut Ozil.

The Prime Minister will subsequently hold a press conference before departing for home, marking the end of his official visit to Turkiye at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which began last Tuesday.

The official visit forms part of efforts to strengthen the long-standing Malaysia–Turkiye relationship.

Malaysia's trade with Turkiye from January to November 2025 reached RM21.2 billion (US$4.92 billion), making the republic a key economic partner for Malaysia.

In 2024, Turkiye was Malaysia's third-largest trading partner, the top export destination, and the fourth-largest source of imports among West Asian countries, with total trade valued at RM24.15 billion (US$5.28 billion).
