Chinese group warns of instability if DAP leaves Madani cabinet

WHILE THE UMNO Veterans group seems excited with the prospects of a DAP pullout from the Madani Cabinet, urging them to quit now instead of waiting until July, the Huazong group has urged DAP MPs to exercise prudence on a proposed internal referendum.

The DAP Special Congress, scheduled for July 12, is expected to discuss the party’s role in the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the delegates will be asked to vote whether office bearers were to stay or quit the Madani Cabinet and GLC posts in a referendum.

However, the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia or Huazong warned DAP MPs that such a move would have significant repercussions for the nation’s stability.

“For as long as the Chinese community feels they need DAP, or for as long as DAP believes the people still need them, any internal referendum must be reconsidered and debated thoroughly,” said Huazong president Datuk Lim Kah Chuan.

According to Lim, the outcome of the special congress would have a ripple effect across the entire government structure.

DAP currently holds five ministerial posts, seven deputy ministerial posts, four senators, one Chief Minister (Penang), one state minister (Sabah), 21 state executive councillors (EXCO), hundreds of local councillors, village chiefs and key positions in government-linked companies (GLCs).

Lim added that the Chinese community and Huazong will respect DAP’s decision at its upcoming special congress, without interference.

However, he stressed that in Malaysia’s current political climate, shaped by racial rhetoric, religious sensitivities, and economic challenges, the community including the private sector still needs DAP to safeguard its interests through rational negotiation and representation.

Any political shift in Malaysia now could impact the medium enterprises and micro-enterprises. He said 95% of these enterprises are made up of Chinese business owners and they drive the national economy.

Lim believes any political shift affecting taxes, financing, and incentives will directly impact their livelihoods.

On another note, UMNO Veterans Club secretary-general, Datuk Mustapha Yaakub, said, “Veterans believe DAP has principles and dignity. It would be very embarrassing if DAP does not fulfill its word.”

Mustapha said DAP’s leadership should not play games with its members after suffering a heavy defeat in the recent Sabah state election.

“DAP leaders must prove they are responsible for the loss and should leave the Cabinet. Members do not want their leaders to make threats or gestures. They want action. Therefore, Veterans urge DAP to take immediate steps to exit the government without waiting for the July congress,” he continued. —Focus Malaysia
