Shareholding probe: AG-led panel quizzes Azam, to summon more witnesses

A special committee investigating MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki has summoned the top graft buster on Thursday to explain his shareholdings in Velocity Capital Partner Berhad.

Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the committee led by Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar is scrutinising the compliance and regularity of the 17.7 million shares that Azam purchased at around RM1.5 million.

"The committee is still in the process of assessing all statements that have been acquired, and it will also summon other witnesses to complete the investigation into this matter.

"The committee gives its assurance that its probe will be carried out comprehensively in a professional, independent, and transparent manner.

"The outcome of this investigation and recommendations for any further action would be forwarded to the relevant authorities, including in cases where it is found that there is a violation of law or rules," he said in a statement today.

Two weeks ago, the government announced a special task force to investigate the head of the anti-graft agency over alleged ownership of shares worth millions in Velocity Capital Partner and Awanbiru Technology Berhad.

Checks with the Companies Commission of Malaysia’s records revealed that Azam had, at one point, owned 17.7 million shares in Velocity Capital Partner and about 4.52 million shares in Awanbiru.

Upon the committee’s formation, the government received criticism over its selection of the three-member investigative panel, with lawmakers and NGOs calling for former chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat to head an independent committee instead. - Mkini
