MARKETING is everything when it comes to promoting one’s fledgling business in a loud place where everyone is vying for attention. And sometimes, people resort to the uncanny or weird tactics to grab attention.
Regardless, any marketer worth their salt knows the difference between fame and infamy, and will do anything to avoid the latter. A recent video on X makes for a fine case study on what one can, and cannot do.
In the video post by netizen @dahfollowbelum, a young chap could be seen slurping from a chilled drink while he dances, scantily clad in a mermaid costume.
Apparently he was trying to promote his drinks stall at an unidentified bazaar Ramadhan. Netizens, however, do not find his antics amusing.
“Imagine when he is making such contents and a car loses control and hits him,” said @Ben39400639 while @mohdzak15099272 hoped his family members would give him a slap.
Also, @ans2lee_ said people would avoid the stall since the guy did not think about the religious implication. “Who knows, we would sin for supporting a business that makes fun of religion,” he added.

On another note, a sharp-sighted @serpentbaretta conjectured that the chap might be a Kelantanese. Here comes the hurtful stereotypes.

“Just look at the nose and you know. This is the type that loves eating Budu,” netizen @Sysafwann pointed out.
Note that budu, a type of traditional pickled fish sauce, is famed and well loved by the people of the east coast, namely Terengganu and Kelantan.
The chap and his stall certainly got the attention they wanted, but at what cost? Maybe he should have just stuck to doing funny contents on TikTok instead.
One must realise that dancing in drags does not pair well with a business that quenches the thirst of the fasting Muslims. Our verdict? Haram!—Focus Malaysia
