Khairy slams Anwar for hasty responses over MACC shareholding row

FORMER health minister Khairy Jamaluddin has criticised Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s handling of allegations against Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, following reports that Azam held shares in private companies while in office.

Khairy expressed disappointment over the PM’s reaction when questioned by reporters, describing it as dismissive and inadequate given the seriousness of the accusation.

“A PM cannot answer like that… whether this issue is true or not, the accusation is serious and related to the integrity of the agency that protects the integrity of the country.”

He argued that the PM should have pledged to address the matter formally. He also said the PM should have said while it is a serious accusation, his government will discuss it in the Cabinet and will make a decision to establish a free inquiry to ensure what really happened.

Moreover, Khairy questioned the credibility of the special committee of inquiry established by Anwar, noting that its members — Attorney General Tan Sri Dusuki, Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Johan, and Public Service Department director-general — all report directly to the PM.

“It seems like establishing the power of attorney does not give confidence to the public that it is free.”

Khairy stressed that while Azam himself had declared readiness to be investigated, the government must ensure the process appears independent to maintain public trust. — Focus Malaysia
