MALAYSIAN Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has given his statement to a special committee investigating his ownership of 17.7 mil shares in Velocity Capital Partner Bhd worth RM1.416 mil.
Chief Secretary Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the committee is reviewing compliance and regulatory aspects and will call more witnesses.
“The committee is examining compliance and regulatory aspects related to the ownership and is assessing all evidence obtained thus far,” he said in a statement on Sunday.
He added that the committee would ensure that the probe is conducted in a transparent, independent and professional manner.
“The findings and recommendations for further action will be submitted to the relevant authorities, including if there is any breach of criminal law or the regulations in force,” he said.
Meanwhile, police are probing a Bloomberg article under defamation laws. Azam maintains he no longer holds shares and that past transactions complied with regulations.
The daughter of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Nurul Izzah Anwar, has recently stated that police investigations into the Bloomberg report concerning alleged share ownership by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki must focus on the allegations itself and not their publication.
“In other words, if there are allegations, investigations must focus on those allegations, not on the publication process. You don’t want to shoot the messenger,” she said. —Focus Malaysia
