GERAKAN president Dominic Lau Hoe Chai said his party is not against PAS leading the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, stressing unity as debates rage within the grouping on its new leadership structure.
In response to allegations that his party is against PAS leading PN, he said: “There is no truth in that allegation. Gerakan has always wanted to be part of the solution, not the problem.”
In an interview with selected media, he was asked whether Gerakan was open to a PAS leader heading PN.
Lau said that whoever becomes PN chairman must be able to unite the coalition’s four component parties.
“This is the minimum criterion that must be met. Secondly, for this position, you must be accepted by Malaysians of all races and religions.
“That is also an important factor. That is why we list all the criteria first, then discuss who is the suitable candidate — whether from PAS, Bersatu, Gerakan, or the Malaysian Indian People’s Party.”
He said PN’s leadership model is still under discussion among its four component parties, with proposals including abolishing the chairman’s post in favour of a presidential or executive council.
The chairman’s role has been vacant since former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin stepped down on Jan 1. PAS has staked a claim, but its president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang declined due to health reasons.
Meanwhile, PAS Information Chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari reportedly said the party cannot allow Bersatu’s prolonged internal disputes to derail preparations for the upcoming general election, signalling it may consider charting its own course for 16th General Election (GE16).
The Pasir Mas MP said PAS views the delay in resolving Bersatu’s internal disputes as it could affect the coalition’s readiness.
“We are worried that if Bersatu fails to resolve its internal conflict, it will disrupt our movement and preparations for the election. If that happens, PAS will have no choice but to move separately from Bersatu in the next election,” he said in a media response that went viral.
Ahmad Fadhli stressed that PAS cannot carry along a party still mired in endless internal strife. He made the statement before the firing of Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin as a Bersatu member. — Focus Malaysia
