KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) information chief Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali has questioned the transfer of senior prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), calling for an explanation from the Attorney-General (A-G).

In an open letter addressed to the A-G, Rafique asked why one of the MACC's most experienced prosecutors had been moved at a time when the agency's integrity and that of its chief commissioner were under intense public scrutiny.

He said Wan Shaharuddin had extensive experience in prosecution and had led several high-profile corruption cases, earning respect from both colleagues and opponents.

"I believe his efficiency and skills in handling various corruption prosecutions in court are second to none.

"The A-G must provide an explanation on this matter. The Trial and Appeals Division of the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) already has many officers. In my view, it is surplus to requirement," he said.

Rafique added that the MACC currently needed officers who were committed to the rule of law and the sovereignty of the legal system to restore public confidence in the anti-graft agency.

"Yes, the A-G has discretion over transfers, but the MACC must have credible officers so that the public can continue to place trust in the agency.

"A transfer of this nature requires an explanation," he said.

His remarks followed an earlier New Straits Times report that Wan Shaharuddin, who was previously appointed during the tenure of former A-G Tommy Thomas to handle high-profile cases, had been moved.

The transfer comes amid heightened attention on the MACC, which has been handling a series of major and high-profile investigations in recent months. - NST
