SUNGAI PETANI: A 22-year-old man led police on a 10km chase last night after allegedly fleeing a roadblock because the road tax on his car had expired.

The pursuit began at about 9.30pm along Jalan Kuala Ketil and ended in Sungai Layar, where the suspect rammed a civilian vehicle and a police patrol car before being arrested.

Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said two patrol personnel had flagged down the suspect's Proton Saga along Jalan Kuala Ketil, but he ignored instructions to stop.

"At 10.10pm, the Kuala Muda district police headquarters received a request for assistance after the man ignored orders to pull over.

"When he reached the Taman Seri Tanjung residential area, the suspect crashed into a resident's parked Proton Saga inside a house garage.

"He continued to flee despite repeated instructions to stop.

"Upon reaching Jalan Sungai Layar, he encountered a police patrol vehicle that had arrived to assist. While attempting to escape, he is believed to have lost control and struck the side of the patrol vehicle," he said in a statement today.

Hanyan said checks later confirmed that the vehicle's road tax had expired, although the suspect held a valid driving licence.

"A preliminary screening found he was not under the influence of drugs." - NST
