Selangor PAS Youth submits pig farming protest memo to DAP rep

Selangor PAS Youth staged a protest in front of Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Wong Siew Ki’s service centre today, following her remarks in the Selangor state assembly urging the sultan to reconsider pig farming using modern, sustainable methods.

Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar said the gathering was held to submit a memorandum of protest against Wong’s proposal, which he described as rude and offensive to the royal institution.

“We are not opposing individuals’ dietary choices, but this protest is because an issue that has already been settled is being raised again, even though it has been laid to rest by His Majesty.

“As an elected representative, she should respect the royal institution and not cause unease among the public,” he said.

According to the memorandum, the DAP assemblyperson’s proposal contradicts Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s decree, in which he stated that he does not consent to pig farming in the state.

A representative from Wong’s office, Tey Boon Kiat, received the memorandum outside the service centre, witnessed by about 30 protesters, including PAS Youth members and NGO representatives.

During the protest, participants chanted “Daulat Tuanku” (Long live His Majesty) and “Allahu Akbar”, while holding placards reading “Wong Siew Ki resign” and “Seri Kembangan deserves better”.

‘Treason’

Sukri also claimed that Wong’s remarks amounted to treason against the Sultan’s decree, which is masked behind arguments of freedom of speech and equality.

Therefore, Selangor PAS Youth demanded that Wong retract her statement, issue a public apology to the sultan and the people of the state, and declare support for the decree to halt pig farming.

“To me, this amounts to treason against the ruler,” he added.

The youth chief also called for Wong to be suspended from the Selangor state assembly for one year.

During the debate on the state ruler’s royal address, Wong proposed that Selangor adopt a modern, closed-house pig farming system, including zero-discharge processes and biogas recycling technologies.

PN and Umno leaders have since accused her proposal of being an affront to Sultan Sharafuddin’s decree, in which he does not consent to pig farming in any district in Selangor, citing pollution concerns and the state’s limited land resources.

The ruler had instead suggested that pork supply needs should be met through imports.

The decree was issued following objections from local residents to a proposed centralised pig farming project in Bukit Tagar. - Mkini
