Tupai King or Squirrel King is a relatively new, premium durian variety gaining popularity in Penang, Malaysia. It's known for its unique flavor, rich aroma, and high price tag, even outstripping some established favorites like Musang King and Black Thorn. Some growers, like Eric Yeap, have started planting Tupai King trees in recent years, but supply still remains limited due to the relatively new nature of the variety.
DURIAN lovers, get ready for a feast. Penang’s durian season is back! This year, it begins in mid-May and is expected to last until late July or early August.
Eric Yeap, owner of 8321 Durian Plantation in Balik Pulau, shared that the recent unpredictable weather and rainfall have resulted in fewer durians for this season.
Yeap said this year’s durian yield is expected to be about 30 percent lower than last year’s.
“The season also started late this year as usually the season starts in late April but we are only starting to get the early batches of durians now,” he said.
Yeap noted that one of the most expensive durian hybrids this season is the recently registered Tupai King.
“It is known for its bitter flavour with a mild alcoholic taste and was officially registered about two years ago by another farm in Balik Pulau.
“Although Tupai King trees have existed for five to six years, the variety has only gained major popularity in the past two years,” he added.
Apart from Tupai King, Yeap’s orchards also offer a wide range of durians, from Kampung varieties to top-sellers like Musang King and Black Thorn. The prices ranges from RM8 to RM130 per kilogramme.
Kampung durians are currently priced between RM8 and RM15 per kilogramme, depending on the specific variety available.
