Saifuddin Abdullah says although Hamzah Zainudin is no longer the opposition leader, he continues to play an active role through meetings and engagements with stakeholders.

PETALING JAYA:
Larut MP Hamzah Zainudin has moved forward with his “Reset” initiative, aimed at strengthening Perikatan Nasional (PN), despite calls for the new party he is expected to lead to be barred from joining the coalition, says Indera Mahkota MP Saifuddin Abdullah.

Saifuddin said Hamzah’s leadership at the national level remained relevant, noting that he also heads the Penggerak Payung Melayu platform which includes various prominent figures and counts former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its adviser.

In his column Merentas Ruang, published in Sinar Harian, Saifuddin said although Hamzah was no longer the opposition leader, he continued to play an active role through meetings and engagements with stakeholders.

He said these engagements involved political leaders, NGOs, professionals, and academics across different races, backgrounds, and major organisations.

“The aim is to strengthen PN and advance a comprehensive national agenda for unity and development.

“However, (Bersatu president) Muhyiddin Yassin has insisted that Hamzah and his party (to be announced soon) be barred from joining PN,” he said.

Hamzah was expelled from Bersatu on Feb 13 following a leadership crisis in the party led by Muhyiddin. He launched the “Reset” movement the following day.

The former Bersatu deputy president is reportedly set to lead a new party, though he has also hinted that the platform he may join could already be in PN.

Last month, Muhyiddin was reported as saying that he would personally reject Hamzah’s entry into PN. He said that decisions on membership require the consensus of component parties, not just a single person.

PN currently comprises PAS, Bersatu, Gerakan, and MIPP.

The ‘Reset’ agenda

Saifuddin said “Reset” reflects a commitment to building a better Malaysia while strengthening the position of the ummah at the regional and global levels.

He said the initiative is grounded in addressing weaknesses, strengthening what works, and fixing what is broken, guided by religious values as well as the principles enshrined in the Federal Constitution, the Rukun Negara, and national history.

In terms of implementation, he said the “Reset” agenda is anchored in three pillars of a New National Consensus: shared goals, inclusive economic prosperity, and fair governance.

“The implementation of this agenda requires victory in the 16th general election (GE16) and the formation of a government through PN and its network to ensure political stability and democratic maturity,” he said.

Saifuddin added that key policy thrusts include embracing Malaysia’s diversity as a national strength, strengthening moderate multiracial democracy, and driving economic growth.

He said other aspects include broader societal development, cultivating a courteous and ethical society through education, strengthening national security, promoting peaceful international relations, and enhancing cooperation between the public, private, and civil society sectors. - FMT
