The prime minister says UEC holders' admission to public universities is subject to conditions similar for those from other education systems outside the national curriculum.

Anwar said UEC holders’ admission to public universities is subject to strict conditions, similar to other applicants from education systems outside the national curriculum, reported Berita Harian.
He said one of the key requirements is that candidates must pass Bahasa Melayu and History.
“Now we have set conditions for international schools, right? The same conditions apply (for UEC holders),” he said when officiating the national-level Teachers’ Day celebration in Ipoh today.
“We have also applied the same conditions for tahfiz and Arabic schools, which previously taught all subjects in Arabic without emphasising Bahasa Melayu and History.
“That is why we made the decision (to open pathways for UEC).”
The Cabinet has decided to allow students from tahfiz institutions, private schools, and Chinese independent secondary schools to enter public universities if they hold a full SPM certificate.
UEC graduates without a full SPM certificate but who sit for BM and History subjects conducted by the Malaysian Examination Board may apply to enrol in limited programmes on Chinese linguistics or Chinese studies.
Anwar said eligible students would not be restricted to language-related courses and could also pursue fields such as accounting.
However, he said final decisions on professional accreditation for certain programmes would be determined by universities and relevant professional bodies.
Among those who have cricitised the Cabinet’s decision are former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who claimed the policy was a political decision taken merely to retain DAP’s support. - FMT
