Malaysia should make it clear to the United States that it wants fugitive businessperson Low Taek Jho to face justice for his role in the 1MDB scandal without exception, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo.
While he agrees with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim that Low’s bid to seek a presidential pardon from Donald Trump is a matter for the US, Gobind said Malaysia must nevertheless express its concern to Washington.
“Malaysia has suffered immense, multi-generational losses because of the 1MDB scandal.
“This was a heist of national proportions that robbed our people of their wealth and our country of its reputation. It took an entire nation to remove the government in 2018 to bring those responsible for it to justice.
“We cannot, and must never allow the architects of this crime and those involved in enabling it, to walk free, bypassing the doors of justice,” said the DAP national chairperson in a press release.
The statement came after Anwar told the media yesterday that Putrajaya would not file a protest against Low’s pardon bid, saying he saw it as a “non-issue”.

Gobind pointed out that Low played a major role in the 1MDB scandal that incurred losses amounting to billions of ringgit to the country.
He said the Kuala Lumpur High Court, which presided over the 1MDB trial against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, found the businessperson had served as the accused’s “proxy and intermediary” in 1MDB affairs.
“Those responsible in this global conspiracy must be brought to justice for crimes committed in connection with it, whether it be here in Malaysia or anywhere else in the world where events, more so events criminal in nature, took place leading to it.
“And Malaysia must be clear and consistent about this. It is for that reason that we must also continue to demand that Low be returned to face the charges against him here in Malaysia,” Gobind said.
According to the Damansara MP, he will raise the matter during this Wednesday’s cabinet meeting so it can be discussed in detail.
Gobind said he hoped that there would be a decision then as to what the government needs to do next regarding Low’s pardon application. - Mkini
