BINTULU: A 5-month-old baby boy suffered severe burns over almost his entire body in a household accident in Sungai Plan here on May 8.
Mohammad Friziny Jainal, 39, said he was in the backyard preparing goods for a small business when the incident occurred at about 7am.
"At that time, my wife, Dayang Norlizawati Awang Umar, 35, was in the kitchen, while our youngest child, Mohammad Firas Aisy, was in a baby walker in the living room.
"Before the incident, my wife was cooking rice. While she was in the kitchen, she did not realise the baby had moved into the kitchen area and pulled on a rice cooker wire that was hanging down," he said when contacted.
He said his wife was alerted by a loud crashing sound before discovering the baby covered in hot rice and water.
"My wife was shocked. I rushed into the kitchen and saw his body and face badly reddened, and he was crying intensely," he said.
Mohammad Friziny said the baby was immediately rushed to Nyabau Hospital here and admitted to the red zone at the emergency department.
"We were informed that he suffered burns over almost his entire body, especially the front part, including the chest, arms, both thighs, left leg and face.
"Baby Aisy underwent skin graft surgery yesterday. The procedure, which began at 11.30am and ended at 5pm, took more than five hours," he said.
He added that the infant was later transferred to a burns ward after briefly being placed in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) following surgery.
Mohammad Friziny said the family was devastated by the incident, noting that Aisy is the youngest of five siblings.
"We had long waited for his birth as we wanted another son. We have five children aged between 20 years and five months, with our eldest and youngest both boys.
"We have always taken care of him closely and took turns looking after him. But due to a moment of carelessness, this happened," he said.
He appealed to the public to pray for his baby's recovery.
"I am very saddened by what has happened. Perhaps there is wisdom behind it. We hope people will pray for Aisy's speedy recovery," he said. - NST
