TOKYO (Bernama-Kyodo): An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 rattled northeastern Japan on Friday, with no tsunami warning issued, the weather agency said, Kyodo News Agency reported.
The focus of the 8:22 pm quake was off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture at about 50 kilometres underground, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The earthquake was logged as lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in some areas in Miyagi Prefecture, and 4 in Iwate and parts of Miyagi.
According to JR East, bullet train services between Tokyo and Aomori Prefecture on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line have been halted following the quake.
No irregularities have been reported at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan, according to the plant operator. -- BERNAMA-KYODO
