Ti Lian Ker questions Madani on Jho Low and its ‘moral foundations’

THE paradox of the Madani government lies in its shifting stance on 1Malaysia Development Bhd or 1MDB, says Kuantan MCA Division Chief Ti Lian Ker after reports that 1MDB mastermind Low Taek Jho @ Jho Low was seen in Kuala Lumpur in 2025.

He said for years, the scandal was framed as Malaysia’s greatest humiliation, the moral foundation of Pakatan Harapan’s legitimacy, with former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak tied to fugitive financier Jho Low as mastermind and Malaysians cast as victims.

Yet today, as reports surface of Jho Low allegedly seeking a US presidential pardon, the government adopts a detached tone, insisting it is “between him and the Americans”.

“Speech after speech, Malaysians were reminded that the nation had been humiliated globally because of 1MDB. Najib was not allowed to separate himself from Jho Low. The narrative was simple: 1MDB = Najib. Jho Low = the mastermind. Malaysia/Rakyat = the victim,” he wrote on Facebook.

After the government said, “Malaysia will not interfere”, Ti wrote that this contrasts with Pakatan Harapan’s earlier embrace of global outrage and foreign investigations to strengthen its narrative against Barisan Nasional (BN).

“That is where the contradiction begins. If 1MDB was truly a crime that devastated Malaysia’s reputation, robbed public trust and became the defining issue of national governance, why does the government now sound detached and passive over the possibility of the central fugitive walking away through foreign political intervention?

“The issue is not whether Malaysia has the legal power to stop an American pardon. Of course, Malaysia cannot dictate US decisions. The issue is political consistency,” he added.

He also said before 2018, the 1MDB scandal was embraced by the opposition – now government – because it strengthened the political narrative against BN.

But now, when decisive moral positioning is expected against the possibility of Jho Low escaping accountability entirely, the tone suddenly becomes cautious and procedural, he said.

He insists that the current stance by the former opposition members creates the perception that 1MDB was not only about justice.

“It was also about  politics. Some said, “Jho Low is a CIA agent deployed to bring Najib and BN down.” —  Focus Malaysia
