KUALA LUMPUR:
Perikatan Nasional chairman Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar says Gerakan is an important bridge between the coalition and the Chinese community.

Speaking at Gerakan’s 58th anniversary convention at the party headquarters here today, Samsuri said Malaysia’s political landscape requires Gerakan to play a stronger role in building political balance.

“I see Gerakan as having a very important role, especially in shaping the political balance of the country, particularly in building bridges of understanding between PN and the Chinese community,” he said.

Samsuri, who is also the opposition leader, said Gerakan’s 58 years were not just a historical milestone but reflected a mature and moderate political approach that remains relevant today.

He said the party should continue to carry a moderate and rational voice in national politics.

Samsuri also said Malaysia’s diversity should be viewed as a strength, and that no Malaysian should be marginalised based on race, religion, or political affiliation.

“We must be fair regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, or background,” he said, adding that assistance should be given to “whoever is entitled”.

Gerakan president Dominic Lau struck a similar tone in his speech earlier, saying “only moderation is the best way for Gerakan”.

Lau also said Malaysians were growing frustrated with unfulfilled political promises, and that the party must reposition itself as a solution-oriented force for a moderate and plural Malaysia.

“People are tired of political slogans. They are tired of promises that cannot be fulfilled. They want solutions. They want action,” he said. - FMT
