KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today spoke with newly appointed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, sharing plans for a potential visit to the Indian state.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said he told the former actor, who took office on May 10, of his upcoming trip to India this September to attend the BRICS Summit.
"I had the opportunity to speak with my friend, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay today, and once again offered my congratulations on the immense responsibility he now carries for the people of Tamil Nadu.
"I also informed him that I will be traveling to India this September to attend the BRICS Summit and hold a meeting with PM Modi. If time permits, I plan to make a brief visit to Tamil Nadu as well.
"May CM Vijay continue to be blessed with the strength and wisdom to lead and govern effectively for the well-being of the people and a bright future for Tamil Nadu."
Vijay is the founder and president of the political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
He was sworn in as Tamil Nadu's 9th chief minister, serving as the head of government for the Indian state.
While the position is officially appointed by the state governor, who acts as the de jure head, de facto executive authority rests with the chief minister in accordance with the Constitution of India.
After securing promises of support from other parties to achieve the required legislative majority, the 51-year-old was administered the oath of office by the state governor at Chennai's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, sparked by TVK party supporters celebrating by bursting firecrackers and distributing sweets across various cities. - NST
