The minimally invasive procedure reduces tissue disruption and allows quicker recovery compared with conventional open spine operations.

The procedure, a significant milestone in the KPJ Health System’s complex spinal care, was the first of its kind in both Malaysia and the Asia Pacific.
The cement screws used are an advanced spinal fixation technology meant to provide greater surgical precision and stability in complex spinal procedures.
Minimally invasive, this procedure reduces tissue disruption and allows quicker recovery compared with conventional open spine operations.
KPJ Selangor Specialist Hospital’s consultant orthopaedic (spine) surgeons Dr Shaharuddin Abdul Rhani and Dr Jamal Azmi Mohamad led the procedure, aided by the hospital’s multidisciplinary surgical team.
KPJ Healthcare president and managing director Chin Keat Chyuan said this achievement reflected the company’s growing depth of subspecialty expertise across its health system.
“Being the first in Malaysia and the Asia Pacific to perform this procedure reinforces our commitment to strengthening minimally invasive surgical capabilities that support more precise surgical care, better recovery and improved patient experience.
“Guided by our ‘Care for Life’ purpose, we remain focused on applying innovation meaningfully to improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes,” he said in a press release.
Jamal, who is also KPJ Selangor’s medical director, said the procedure showed the collective expertise and coordination shared by the hospital’s medical team in performing complex procedures safely and effectively. - FMT
