Police probe Langkawi drug trafficking network

Police are investigating a drug trafficking network in Langkawi allegedly linked to police personnel, with efforts underway to identify the individuals or groups involved.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said police are aware of reports regarding the drug trafficking network in Langkawi and investigations are ongoing.

“We are still investigating. I need to determine who the individuals or groups involved are. We will not hesitate to take legal action if it involves breaches of national security and the law,” he told reporters after attending the launch of a dialogue session in Kuala Lumpur today.

Earlier, it was reported that an organised drug trafficking syndicate was operating around the Langkawi islands, allegedly involving an insider.

Khalid also warned that police would not hesitate to take stern action against any officer or personnel found involved in criminal activities, including drug trafficking.

Commenting on the special dialogue, Khalid said it is part of the police’s ongoing initiative to improve service quality and strengthen the force’s investigative approach.

He said that, unlike previous years, which were more department-specific, this year’s collaboration involves comprehensive participation from various agencies within the force.

“This year, we are involving the Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Criminal Investigation Department, Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department and all relevant departments to ensure more unified operations,” he said.

He added that interdepartmental synergy is vital to ensure that investigations into security issues are carried out comprehensively to safeguard national security.
