KUALA LUMPUR: A sinkhole nearly the size of a motorcycle has opened on Jalan Wangsa Delima 4 in Wangsa Maju, after dashcam footage showed a car passing over the spot moments before it formed.
A video posted by user arifizyani on Threads yesterday showed the sinkhole forming next to a drainage grate, with large volumes of water pouring into the cavity from what appeared to be a drainage pipe beneath the road.
Water could be seen pooling at the bottom of the hole, while exposed rebar and bricks protruded from its walls. Sections of the surrounding asphalt appeared unstable at the edge of the opening.
The caption warned: "Be careful if you pass this road today. Jalan Wangsa Delima 4, Wangsa Maju. Near the Wangsa Walk intersection."
A separate dashcam video posted by user hazim_din in the comments showed his car travelling along the same road and passing over the area shortly before the sinkhole formed, after which the vehicle jolted sharply, forcing him to pull over.
The videos drew widespread concern in the comments, with many users alarmed by the density of high-rise buildings in the area.
"Imagine how many condominiums there are. Scary," wrote user abudhahir4u.
Another commenter, muhaeimmin, said: "Wangsa Maju?! That area already has so many tall apartments and condominiums, and now the ground underneath is hollow."
User im_tristupe attributed the sinkhole to long-term erosion.
"Drainage water and surface runoff. The soil erosion has been going on for a long time to cause this amount of soil movement," the commenter wrote. - NST
