Historic RM150 mil budget allocation for Indian community draws mixed reactions online

PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has struck back against a strong narrative that the Indian community is being marginalized, with the announcement of a historic budget of RM150 mil for Malaysia Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA).

According to Anwar, the additional allocation follows MITRA’s good performance, especially in channeling aid to the poor of the Indian community.

Note that MITRA is tasked to identify the current issues and challenges affecting the Indian community.

Also, it implements socio-economic development initiatives and coordinates cooperation between the government and the private sector towards the development of the Indian community in general.

Anwar stressed that the Madani government would continue to uphold the principle of social justice regardless of the people’s race or background.

“This is the highest MITRA allocation in history. We care, we serve, we deliver, this is Madani govt, ” Minister of Housing and Local Government Nga Kor Ming further pointed out in a post.

But are our fellow netizens celebrating the 50% increase in budget?

Netizen @Vindhar1 for example, compared the RM150 mil to the RM2.5 bil allocation to syair Islam, which serves to strengthen Islamic educational institutions, upholding mosques as community centers, and many more.

However, @pendekarhitam88 countered that the Indian population is smaller, hence the lower budget.

“So? By giving money, people will forgive what he did to friends who helped him and family when he was jailed?? Is that how it works?” wondered @dimahpiao.

Then there was @DrAFKam pointing out that Dato’ Sri Ramanan Ramakrishnan who leads MITRA, cannot be trusted. “Please make sure the money is well spent on the people, not on certain people,” he added for good measure.

Also, @fauzimz said they only give such things when the election is near, and that they should be punished.

“There won’t be anymore PH next election,” said a prophetic @amateurgolferda and @JeffreyTan4kxf added, “Too late! The damage has been done!”

Whether the record allocation will help rebuild confidence within the Indian community remains to be seen, as online reactions suggest that for many voters, financial commitments alone may not be enough to erase lingering frustrations or restore political goodwill.

With election speculation already swirling, the real test for the government will be proving that the funds are transparently managed and deliver meaningful impact where they are needed most. — Focus Malaysia
