KUALA LUMPUR: The armed forces said its process for appointing senior officers is conducted professionally and based on merit.
It said every senior officer appointment is grounded in merit and takes into account the "strategic needs of the organisation as a whole".
The armed forces said it had taken note of views expressed in the local media on May 9 on the matter, and said it appreciated veterans' continued concern for the country's defence institution.
It said the evaluation process considers leadership track record, integrity, operational experience, competency, professional qualifications, suitability for the position and current service requirements.
For positions of a critical and strategic nature, it said subject matter expertise is also a key consideration, it said.
It added that senior officer appointments are not evaluated solely on the basis of a candidate's original corps, branch or service arm.
The armed forces said that some strategic considerations behind individual appointment decisions cannot be disclosed publicly due to organisational sensitivity and security factors.
It said all appointment decisions are carried out within legal bounds, through an orderly internal process, and are based on the interests of the institution, continuity of command, and confidence in the capability and credibility of senior officers under consideration.
The armed forces, together with the defence ministry, said it remains committed to ensuring that all senior officer appointments are carried out professionally, transparently and based on merit, integrity, competency and the strategic interests of the organisation. - NST
