“Unlike MYOB, gutless Chinese, Malays would have helped stare c*ck assault victim at Kepong eatery”

“TO stare c*ck” in Malaysian colloquial parlance is to throw dagger or disapproving looks at strangers.

This will usually result in either one of two things – the recipient(s) of the said “c*ck stare” will get the strong hint, thus toning down whatever it is that may have caused the disapproving glare OR it may end up with pricked egos leading to a full-blown fracas.

An example of the latter can be seen in CCTV footage of a brawl that broke out in a restaurant in Jalan Besar Kepong at 2.12am on May 7.

As confirmed by Sentul police chief Basri Sangoni, the altercation was a result of unfriendly glances.

“The fight started when the suspects and victim were eating at the restaurant as seen in the video. The victim allegedly glared at one of the suspects who was drunk,” he pointed out in a statement.  “The suspect then became upset at being stared at and attacked the victim.”

Three men have since been arrested and remanded to help investigations.

CCTV footage of the violent exchange has gone viral with Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng being among those who shared the clip.

According to the DAP lawmaker, the victim had filed a police report the next day after being treated for his injuries which necessitated four stitches to his head.

‘Malays would have lent helping hand’

Lim who is a trained lawyer further noted that the assailants and the victim did not know each other. Tempers flared when victim showed his displeasure at the three men who were talking loudly by committing the grave offence of “staring c*ck”.

The post shared on Facebook Reels which has been viewed 473K times have amassed 3.2K likes, 2K comments and 789 shares at time of writing with many commenters expressing shock and horror at the violent altercation that occurred in a public space.’

However, one thing that seems to perturb a number of observers was the lack of assistance from bystanders for the victim when the attack took place. It is not like the restaurant was deserted. It was also noted that there was even a police station “50 metres in front”.

To put this crudely, everyone behaved in a MYOB (mind your own business) fashion or as if they were oblivious to what was happening around them.

Thus, the observation that Malay bystanders would have lent a helping hand to the victim (see above screenshot) gained plenty of traction.

Many a Malay male also noted the unfair fight where the assailants outnumbered the victim 3-to-1. They postulated they would at least have helped even out the odds.

It was also surmised that the Chinese rarely help others out in such scenarios because they are described as “takut mati” (literally fear of death).

A Malay commenter responded in jest that since Malays are paupers, they are less fearful of “takut mati”.

Whether in jest or not, the observation that the Chinese tend to avoid trouble does ring true as this video clearly highlights.

Nobody besides the restaurant owner tried to intervene or come to the victim’s aid. At the very least, a phone call to alert the cops at the nearby police station would have helped de-escalate the situation.

In the meantime, best NOT to “stare c*ck” as it may result in a proper beating. –  Focus Malaysia
