Home minister: No formal request from Bangladesh to extradite Bestinet founder

The Home Ministry has not received any formal request from Bangladesh to extradite Bestinet founder Aminul Islam Abdul Nor, according to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

In his written parliamentary reply to Wong Chen (Harapan-Subang), Saifuddin said that although Malaysia has no extradition treaty with Bangladesh, the process can still be initiated.

“If Bangladesh wants to request the individual concerned to be extradited to Bangladesh, a request has to be made to the home minister through the country’s diplomatic representative, as per Section 12 of Act 479 (Extradition Act 1992).

“To date, the Home Ministry has not received any official request from the Bangladesh government or its diplomatic representatives to extradite the individual,” the minister said.

Saifuddin was responding to Wong’s query about the status of Bangladesh’s request to extradite Aminul (above), who is wanted by Bangladeshi authorities over alleged money laundering, extortion, and trafficking of migrant workers.

Malaysiakini has reached out to Aminul for comments.

In November 2024, Bangladesh police called on Malaysia to arrest and extradite Aminul.

Bestinet runs the controversial and lucrative Foreign Worker Central Management System (FWCMS), which the Malaysian government used to process the entry of hundreds of thousands of migrant workers.

Aminul, a Bangladesh-born naturalised Malaysian, is no longer serving as chairperson but still holds shares in the company.

Bangladesh police had also requested that Malaysia arrest Aminul’s associate Ruhul Amin over the same charges.

Bestinet and Aminul have since refuted the allegations against them. - Mkini
