Education

  • The Education Ministry has received a total of 73,386 applications to enrol six-year-olds in Year One next year, said Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh.

This is on top of 405,033 children in the seven-year-old cohort registered to enrol at the same primary level.

According to Wong (above), as preparations to receive the increasing number of pupils, 2,596 additional classrooms are being built using the Industrialised Building System modular at 838 schools nationwide.

"The ministry is recruiting 3,150 teachers on a contract-of-service basis for next year to address the immediate need for teachers in primary schools based on current requirements and student enrolment figures," he said during the oral question and answer session at the Dewan Rakyat this morning.

Crime

  • Ahmad Yahaya (PN-Pokok Sena) has urged the Transport Ministry to consider a tiered traffic summons system, saying offenders should be issued compounds based on income levels.

In debating the ministry's Road Transport Act (Amendment) Bill today, Ahmad raised concerns about how its proposal to increase the RM300 maximum traffic compound fine to RM500 would affect the poor, as the burden is not the same for everyone.

    Pokok Sena MP Ahmad Yahaya

"If we can impose different levels of fees (for road tax) according to areas of use to ensure fairness, why don't we adopt a similar indicator for traffic summonses, by imposing fines based on income levels?" he asked.

Meanwhile, Idris Ahmad (PN-Bagan Serai) urged against imposing the same compound amounts for every type of offence, saying such a practice is unfair to road users.

Tourism

The government is open to considering making a water music festival an annual event, said Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing.

However, he stressed that getting the idea approved would have to be based on a comprehensive assessment.

"It should take into account the economic impact and distribution of benefits enjoyed by local businesses, the ability to manage logistical challenges such as public traffic congestion during the event, the promotional value to the country, as well as the event’s level of alignment with the national tourism vision," Tiong said in a written parliamentary reply to Lim Lip Eng (Harapan-Kepong). - Mkini
