Education

  • Kedah exco member Haim Hilman Abdullah will face charges at the Seremban Magistrate’s Court tomorrow over his claims regarding public university admissions.

According to a media invitation issued by Bukit Aman, the Jitra assemblyperson will be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which criminalises making statements that would cause public alarm and may induce any person to commit an offence against the state or public tranquillity.

Haim (above) said on Facebook that he would cooperate with the legal process while continuing to ensure Malaysian children will have fair access to education regardless of their race.

Court

  • The MCMC has obtained an interim injunction barring the blogger Wan Azri Wan Deris, known as Papagomo, from making false statements about the commission or disseminating any “detrimental” content online.

In a statement, the MCMC said the ex parte injunction will remain in force pending a hearing between the two parties or further directions from the court.

The order from the Kuala Lumpur High Court comes as the MCMC seeks legal action against Wan Azri, whom it alleges had falsely claimed that the MCMC blocked access to a Malaysia Gazette report about a court case between him and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

  • Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the government have applied to strike out the originating summons brought by five opposition MPs over the Malaysia-US reciprocal trade deal, Bernama reported.

Federal counsel Sallehuddin Ali reportedly informed the Kuala Lumpur High Court of the matter during case management before judge Azizan Arshad.

P Waythamoorty, one of the lawyers representing the plaintiffs, told the court that his clients had also filed an application seeking a reference of constitutional questions to the Federal Court in relation to the deal.

The court fixed Oct 8 to hear both matters.

Religion

  • The Christian Federation of Malaysia has welcomed Selangor’s revised guidelines on non-Islamic places of worship, saying that the state government has been pragmatic and inclusive in addressing concerns with the previous guidelines and inadequate land allocation for such purposes.

Its chairperson, Eu Hong Seng, urged the federal government and other state governments to review their own policies.

“We believe that the revised Selangor guidelines provide a constructive framework for both the federal government and other state governments in formulating policies and guidelines relating to non-Islamic houses of worship throughout the country.

“The cordial and respectful engagement between the state government and representatives of non-Islamic religious communities sets a positive precedent for future collaboration,” he said. - Mkini
