PETALING JAYA:
Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the BN electoral pact with Perikatan Nasional will be extended for the Melaka state election.

“The blue and dark blue wave which began in Johor will ripple through Melaka,” Zahid said at a press conference in Seremban tonight following the alliance’s victory in the Negeri Sembilan state election. Unofficial results showed that BN had secured 25 seats in the 36-member state assembly, decisively ending Pakatan Harapan’s hold on the state government.

Also present at the press conference were Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan (who was re-elected in Rantau for a sixth term) and Wawasan president Hamzah Zainudin.

BN and PN established an informal electoral pact for the Negeri Sembilan polls, under which BN contested 25 seats while the PAS-led PN contested the remaining 11.

At the Johor polls last month, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man ordered all party members and supporters to vote for BN in seats not contested by PN.

Last night, Zahid said BN was open to continuing its cooperation with PN in the coming Melaka state election, but decision would depend on discussions among all parties.

The Melaka state assembly’s current term ends in December, unless it is dissolved earlier. Elections must be held within 60 days of dissolution, or by late February at the latest. In 2020, BN won 21 of the 28 state assembly seats. - FMT
