Amid gloomy weather, hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their final respects.
The cemetery is about 50m from Idrus' house.
The sombre gathering included Anwar, his children, close family members, villagers, community leaders and dignitaries who arrived to offer condolences to the bereaved family.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said he returned to his hometown with a heavy heart to join his extended family in paying their final respects to his elder brother.
Reflecting on the loss, Anwar expressed deep gratitude for his late brother's lifelong dedication, love and kindness towards the family.
"Thank you for all the love, contributions, and goodwill you poured out for this family throughout your life," he shared in a heartfelt message.
Despite the overwhelming sense of loss and irreplaceable absence left in their lives, the prime minister reaffirmed the family's strength and resolve to move forward together.
Earlier, at 12.20pm, Anwar joined local villagers on foot, walking about 200m from Idrus' residence to the temporary prayer hall of Masjid Cherok Tokun Bawah.
Anwar walked alongside the community to accompany the remains for Friday prayers and funeral prayers, which were presided over by Penang mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Sukki Othman, before proceeding with the burial.
Idrus, 83, passed away peacefully at his home in Cherok Tokun, leaving behind cherished memories in the close-knit village community where he spent his life.
Anwar had earlier arrived at Idrus' residence at 11.05am, where he was greeted by hundreds of people.…
He was accompanied by his wife, Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, alongside Toh Puan Raja Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah, arrived to pay their respects at 11.15am.
Also present were Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid and state Umno chief Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir.
The prime minister received news of his brother's passing while en route back to Malaysia following a three-day official visit to China.
In a social media tribute, Anwar reflected on the loss of a lifelong companion who shared countless cherished memories, expressing deep sorrow at being unable to stand by his side during his final moments. - NST
