UM becomes first Malaysian university to rank among world’s top 200

Universiti Malaya (UM), Malaysia’s oldest higher education institution, is now among the world’s top 200 universities.

It is ranked 194th in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2027, making it the first university in Malaysia to break into the top 200.

UM described the recognition as a “significant rise” in its global ranking, having risen from the 351-400 band in 2023.

“With 2,297 universities ranked worldwide in the 2027 edition, UM is now positioned among approximately the top 8.5% globally, while retaining its position as Malaysia’s highest-ranked university in the THE World University Rankings,” the university said in a statement today.

UM vice-chancellor Noor Azuan Abu Osman said the achievement belonged to Malaysia as a whole and sent a clear message that a Malaysian university could stand among the world’s leading institutions.

“Recognition must translate into responsibility. We will use this momentum to push harder, aim higher and ensure that Malaysia’s premier university continues to create value for the nation while making its mark on the world,” he said.

THE uses 13 performance indicators to assess universities on teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

In 2019, UM became the first Malaysian university to be ranked among the top 40 Asian universities, placing 38th among some 400 Asian universities, while ranking in the 301-350 band globally among 1,000 universities. - FMT
