Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang speculates the one who leads Pakatan Harapan is likely to be the one who holds the microphone during the unveiling of the opposition coalition’s leadership line-up.
In this case, said Tan, it is former prime minister and now Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who has been seen holding the microphone.
“In the Pakatan Harapan leadership line-up, there are three people at the top. So who is the leader? I am also confused.
“The person in command is usually the person who holds the microphone.
“The microphone is in front of Mahathir, so I take it that Mahathir is the leader of Harapan,” Tan said during a press conference at the Gerakan headquarters today, after its Youth meeting.
Pakatan Harapan revealed its leadership line-up on Thursday night, naming jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim as the de facto leader, Mahathir as the chairperson and Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the president.
However, Tan homed in on the absence of an announcement of Harapan’s prime minister candidate.
“So I would like to pose this question today to Harapan, who is your actual leader?
“Is the one holding the microphone your future prime minister or someone else?” he questioned, pointing to himself speaking into the microphone saying this shows he is the Gerakan Youth chief.
'Why the secrecy'
He further queried whether a vote for PKR or DAP would be a vote for Mahathir as prime minister, and urged the opposition to “tell the truth”.
Who is their candidate for the seventh prime minister of Malaysia, he asked again.
“If it is really Mahathir, then just say so, because it is not nice to keep it from the public,” he said.
While the opposition has not announced who their prime minister candidate would be, they have indicated strongly that Anwar will be their choice.
During the reveal of Harapan’s line-up, Mahathir said there would be an interim prime minister before Anwar takes over, as the legal process for the jailed leader to re-enter politics could be a long one.
“We will announce who the seventh PM will be, but today we will only announce the eighth one,” he had said then.
However, he had later clarified their “interim prime minister” would be a fully functioning prime minister.
Tan meanwhile repeated the often said claim that BN has always had a clear leader and prime minister candidate, which is the incumbent Prime Minister Najib Razak.
He also said the Election Commission should enact a law to make it mandatory for any coalition contesting in the general election to announce their prime minister candidate, so that the rakyat can know who they are voting for as prime minister.- Mkini
