Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir has warned of legal action over coverage of his defamation trial against the prime minister's press secretary Tengku Sarifuddin Tengku Ahmad.
"I take note of the reports by a number of media, particularly Utusan Malaysia, on my defamation trial against Tengku Sarifuddin which took place on Thursday and Friday.
"The title and content of the reports were not only untrue but twisted to give a wrong picture of what actually happened during the trial.
"I have instructed my lawyers to take all necessary measures in accordance with the law to deal with the matter," he said in a statement today.
Mukhriz is suing Tengku Sarifuddin for accusing him of, amongst others, gunning for the premiership with the help of his father, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Utusan Malaysia today published a story on the trial under the title "Dr Mahathir admits efforts to dislodge Najib since 2014" (Dr Mahathir akui usaha jatuhkan Najib sejak2014).
In the story, Utusan Malaysia claimed that Mukhriz said it was "not the only way" (bukanlah satu-satunya cara) with regard to Mahathir clearing the path for his political career.
Malaysiakini also covered the trial, during which Mukhriz said it was "illogical" for Mahathir to push him as prime minister 13 to 14 years after he had retired.- Mkini
