PRIME Minister Najib Razak’s successful visit to the White House is proof he is not guilty of any of the charges levelled by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) investigating the 1Malaysia Development Bhd financial scandal, an Umno lawmaker said yesterday night.
Langkawi MP Nawawi Ahmad said if Najib had been guilty of alleged corruption, he would have been arrested during his just concluded working visit to Washington, DC.
“He wasn’t arrested. So it appears that the prime minister is not involved in the DoJ’s investigations and in the 1MDB scandal,” said Nawawi, who was part of a welcoming party for the prime minister landing at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Najib visited the White House for the first time on Tuesday. In a meeting with US President Donald Trump, Najib said Malaysia would invest US$24 billion in the purchase of 33 Boeing aircraft and in US infrastructure redevelopment projects.
Opposition members have criticised Najib for not securing anything from the US in return and have accused him of using the visit to whitewash the controversy surrounding his involvement in 1MDB.
More than 300 people gathered at the airport at 6pm to welcome the prime minister home with “kompang” and banners bearing the words “Hidup PM” (Long live the PM), “Hidup Najib” (Long live Najib), dan “Kami bangga dengan Najib” (We are proud of Najib).
