A Sarawak DAP member has been arrested, allegedly for disparaging Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Abdul Aziz Isa, who is the aide to Sarawak DAP leader Chong Chieng Jen, was reportedly detained under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233(1)(a) of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Act.
"The charge was that he has posted some unpleasant remarks about the prime minister," Chong posted on their Facebook page.
Section 233(1)(a) of the MCMC Act deals with the offence of intentionally creating or sending derogatory communications with the intent of hurting others' feelings.
If convicted, Aziz may face a maximum fine of RM50,000, or a jail term not exceeding one year or both.
Section 504 of the Penal Code deals with intentional insult with intent to provoke a break of the peace, and carries a two-year jail sentence, a fine, or both if convicted.
When contacted, Chong said Aziz had been summoned by police to give a statement at the One Stop Centre Police Station in Kuching. He was handcuffed and arrested upon arrival at 3.30PM.
It is not clear which of Aziz's Facebook posts the arrest was over.
"It is a big irony that on this Malaysia Day, the rights of the people to comment against our political leaders is so much suppressed as if there are no rights of expression amongst the rakyat.
"It is a shame that the administration of the country has to resort to police oppression to suppress the voices of dissent," Chong said on Facebook. - Mkini
