Jamal brings sledgehammer to police station

Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos arrived at the Ampang district police headquarters for questioning today, and brought along a sledgehammer.
“A few individuals made police reports against me after my press conference the other day so the police started an investigation paper.
“They told me to bring my sledgehammer as proof today,” said Jamal when contacted.
Jamal, along with eight other individuals, was questioned for almost two hours over a Sept 5 press conference, in which he broke two tables with the said sledgehammer.
It was a “symbolic stunt” to show the seriousness of his call for the Selangor state government to freeze licenses issued to gambling centres in the state.
He was reported as threatening to act “outside legal boundaries” if local councils failed to take action against the centres.
Despite being summoned by police, Jamal maintained that the stunt was necessary.
“I am a community leader, an NGO leader and a political leader.
“So when I receive complaints from the people about how many of these gambling centres are operating close to places of worship, schools and housing areas, I need to act.
“I might use different methods from other people, but my message is that licenses for these businesses need to be frozen,” the Gabungan NGO-NGO Melayu (Malay NGOs Coalition) chairperson told Malaysiakini.
Jamal was previously arrested and later remanded five days for alleged gang robbery, after leading a group that raided what they claimed to be gambling dens in Taman Kosas, Ampang.

The raids were part of a campaign to highlight alleged failures by the opposition-led Selangor state government to curb illicit activities.
He had been warned by authorities and the police not to take the law into his own hands.
Selangor CID chief Fadzil Ahmat later said the alleged gambling dens were licensed as family entertainment outlets, and had received permits from the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ). - Mkini
