'He says something in Malaysia and says something else when he is elsewhere.'
PETALING JAYA: Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran has reproached Prime Minister Najib Razak for alleged inconsistency in words and action with regard to his claim that he is a moderate Muslim leader.
“He says something in Malaysia and says something else when he is elsewhere,” said Kulasegaran, who is a DAP member.
He was commenting on news reports about Najib’s recent meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Najib has been quoted as telling Trump to support moderate and progressive Muslim governments, saying such support would go a long way towards defeating terrorist groups.
However, Kulasegaran said, Putrajaya had shown unfairness towards non-Muslims in its conduct over the years.
He cited several examples, including the case of M Indira Ghandi, a Hindu woman who has been stuck in a long legal battle to gain custody of her children and reverse their unilateral conversion to Islam by her ex-husband.
He also spoke of Lam Shu Jie, a student who couldn’t get a government scholarship despite scoring top grades in her SPM examination. Lam eventually received a scholarship from Melbourne University and her research may have uncovered a method of killing antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Kulasegaran said such a loss of talent was caused by unequal government policies.
He also said Najib appeared uncertain in his stand over the right of non-Muslims to use “Allah” in reference to God.
“I am sure the Americans are not taken in by his sweet words,” he added.
For the Malaysian government to be considered moderate, he said, Najib had to be honest and clarify issues that were fundamental in determining the truth of the claim.
He urged the prime minister to stop making statements just to fit the occasion. “He must be consistent,” he said. - Mkini
