RM1.111 billion of the RM1.158 billion in additional assessments and penalties imposed against errant taxpayers this year was levied on doctors, report says.
PETALING JAYA: Doctors account for the bulk of tax dodgers according to the tax audit operation carried out by the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) so far this year.
This follows reports that RM1.111 billion of the RM1.158 billion in total additional assessments and penalties imposed on errant taxpayers for under-declaring their taxes, was levied on doctors.
TheSun daily, citing Oriental Daily News, said the remaining penalties were imposed on engineers (RM3.83 million), architects (RM1.181 million) and lawyers (RM7.39 million).
Last month, its chief executive officer Sabin Samitah warned that the IRB would be targeting these groups in its upcoming audit operation.
He added that the operation would likely kick off in September or October.
Speaking to the Oriental Daily, Sabin said it was standard practice for the IRB to investigate professionals suspected of under-declaring or evading taxes.
The tax audit operation carried out over the first eight months of the year covered 4,610 professionals, including those from these groups.
Of these, 3,000 accounts belonged to doctors. The remaining accounts belonged to engineers (1,287), lawyers (182) and architects (141).
The report said the audits were part of the IRB’s routine tax audit exercise, and that not all the individuals investigated were found to be tax dodgers. - FMT
