A speech by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak regarding the Chinese Malaysian community yesterday had been taken out of context, said MCA secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan.
Ong was referring to Najib's speech at the “Malaysian Chinese Patriotic Rally” organised by MCA yesterday, where the prime minister said Chinese Malaysians would be "the first to be targeted if there was no peace" in the country.
Taken in its entirety, Ong said listeners would understand that Najib’s speech was about the need to fight terrorists and extremists such as the Islamic State (IS), and all Malaysians would suffer if such groups succeed in destabilising Malaysia.
“Since many Chinese are involved in business activities - whether large enterprises or small and medium enterprises - and since most Chinese are non-Muslims; the Chinese community would face a greater risk because IS and other terrorist groups specifically target non-Muslims.
“The prime minister was emphasising the importance of peace in the country, and the government’s role in ensuring peace and stability.
“However, certain online media had twisted his words and took it out of context in a bid to create the wrong impression that the prime minister was threatening the Chinese community,” he said in a statement today.
He did not name the media outlet in question.
Ong said that Najib had also praised the success of ethnic Chinese-owned businesses, and said their success is also Malaysia’s success.
He lamented this part of Najib’s speech was not reflected in reports by a certain online media, but had instead misled its readers.
“This is not the first time this online portal published misleading news. Any news reporting should be done with integrity and professionalism, not by deviating from facts and misleading readers.
“Such behaviour is extremely irresponsible,” he said.
At the “Malaysian Chinese Patriotic Rally”, Najib said the Chinese community would be targeted first if Malaysia descends into chaos, which is why the government is committed to maintaining peace in the country.
“If there is no peace in our country, what will happen? The Chinese will be the first to be targeted if there is no peace in this country.
“That is why we are a moderate government, we are committed to the peace and harmony, mutual respect to this country.
“We fight the Islamic State (terrorist group), we make sure they don't harm Malaysians including the Chinese in Malaysia,” he said.
In response, the Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong said Najib's comment was perceived as a threat to the Chinese community and said this would result in a backlash against the prime minister.
MCA religious harmony bureau chief Ti Lian Ker said Liew had maliciously taken Najib’s speech out of context and demanded that he retract his statement.
He said 13,000 members and leaders of the Chinese Guilds and Associations were present during Najib’s speech, and none of them was offended by Najib’s remarks.
Instead, he said Najib had made his speech with sincerity and in good faith, and the audience responded with an applause.
“It is very malicious and ill-intended for DAP MP Liew Chin Tong to state otherwise or distort the true meaning and context of the prime minister's speech to mean it as a threat or having elements of threat.
“I now call upon the DAP strategic adviser to retract his allegations and apologise to the prime minister for attempting to stir or provoke racial hatred by distorting or attempting to quote the prime minister's speech out of context,” said Ti. - Mkini
