‘Sabahans keener for rights than projects’

Star Youth chief says his party plans another tour of the state to educate the populace.
Feddrin-Tuliang-Parti-Solidariti-Tanah-Airku-1-1KOTA KINABALU: Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) has announced that it plans a new tour of Sabah to explain the rights of the state’s citizens under the Malaysia Agreement of 1963.
Speaking to FMT, Star Youth chief Feddrin Tuliang said other component parties in the Gabungan Sabah coalition were likely to join the roadshow.
Referring to a previous tour, he said: “The response towards Gabungan Sabah and our message has been truly overwhelming, especially from the youths.
“It is our hope to change this government. We want the Federal Constitution revamped because it is only a heavily modified constitution of the Federation of Malaya.
“We want a new Federation of Malaysia constitution that recognises Sabah as an equal partner.”
Feddrin said he believed the current government could no longer attract voters merely by promising economic projects.
He claimed that more and more Sabahans were showing they had greater interest in state rights than in economic development.
“Development is secondary now,” he said. “Maybe people are frustrated because of broken promises.”
He said his party still considered economic development to be important for Sabah. “But that is no longer the sole focus,” he added.
“Now, we want our rights to be restored because we have lost them. The only way to have these back is for us to take over the state government. Once we have the power, development projects will follow naturally.”
He said he found out from the previous tour that many Sabahans, while still ignorant of their rights as citizens of Malaysia, were eager to learn and were open to ideas. He attributed this to their increasing exposure to “balanced reports on current issues” available through the internet. -FMT
