The 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) introduced in 2012 has been adopted by the Saudi Arabian government and now Egypt is the latest country to express interest to implement the economic model.
Deputy Finance Minister Othman Aziz said the acceptance by the two Middle East countries proved BR1M, the brainchild of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was a viable economic model, proven to assist the less fortunate group.
“I see BR1M as a noble programme accepted by the low-income groups... the model is now being seriously studied for implementation in Egypt.
“It also meant what had been carried out by the government so far has become a model for Egypt and Saudi Arabia," he said in a Jerlun constituency "Back to School" programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pulau Chapa in Jerlun today.
On the more than seven million BR1M recipients in the country, Othman urged the people to update their status or make fresh applications at the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) offices before the closing date on Dec 31 to avoid getting their names dropped from the list.
"At the moment, BR1M is at registration and updating stage. We are calling on the people to update their details... sometimes there are technical errors and names may be dropped accidentally,” he said.
