The Kelantan government is attempting to mask its failures by claiming that the lack of development in the state is deliberate, said Umno information chief Annuar Musa.
"The world is moving quickly. If we want to deliberately slow down development, we have to have a good excuse.
"Don't think that if we slow down, people will follow our tempo. The world will keep moving forward," he said.
Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah (photo) caused a stir last week when he told a ceramah that Kelantan's physical development is slow because village folks would not be able to keep up otherwise.
Citing backwaters-turned-tourist hotspot Langkawi as an example, Amar said the uncontrolled development would lead to social ills.
Kelantan has consistently been the poorest state in Malaysia in terms of GDP per capita over the past decade.
The state has been ruled by PAS since 1990.
Speaking to reporters in Kota Bharu today, Annuar said his fellow Kelantanese were just as capable as other Malaysians, and should not be held back.
"Other people are moving ahead, but we are not. People want modernity but (here they) want us to take a step back, so they are finding excuses.
"I think what was said by the deputy menteri besar is an attempt to mask his failures. It is not a good trait of a leader," he said.- FMT
