Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's track record in achieving a two-thirds majority in all five general elections during his 22-year rule is enough to show that Umno information chief Annuar Musa's claim against him was wrong.
Bersatu supreme council member Rais Hussin Mohamed Ariff was responding to Annuar who had claimed that the Malays never really supported Mahathir even during his tenure as the country's top leader.
"Mahathir had five general elections, in all five general elections he had a two-thirds majority; that speaks volume of his capabilities in running the nation and putting people together.
"I think Annuar is trying to earn his living. He talks things that are completely out of the sphere of logic," said Rais (photo) in a press conference at Bersatu's headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.
He added how Mahathir's success in the five elections was enough to showcase Mahathir's leadership at the time.
Meanwhile, Mahathir's son, Bersatu deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir who was also present at the press conference today merely laughed when asked to respond to Annuar's statement.
"He can say whatever he likes but I think deeds will be taken more seriously than mere words coming from the Umno information chief," chuckled Mukhriz.
Citing his experience working with Mahathir, Annuar on Wednesday had claimed that he had found it difficult to convince Malay voters to back Mahathir.
Malays who had supported Mahathir, Annuar claimed, were those who supported him because of his "Umno-ness" and not his "Mahathir-ness".
The Ketereh MP also believed the few who supported Mahathir then would not continue doing so now.- Mkini
